Ensure Compatibility: The Easy Guide to Selecting the Ideal Cable Marker for Your Printer Ribbon

Printing high-quality, durable labels requires choosing the right printer ribbon and cable marker. However, since markers and ribbons are not always compatible with one another, an incorrect choice can result in an inability to print your cable markers.

With so many options available, it's easy to become confused about which cable marker is the right one for your specific printer ribbon. That's why we've created a handy Ribbon Matrix, which provides the information you need to make an informed decision.

By referring to our Ribbon Matrix, you can choose the right identification products for your labelling projects. It offers a comprehensive list of compatible printer ribbons and cable markers, so you can ensure that you're making the right choice.

Understanding How Thermal Transfer Printer Ribbons Work.

How does thermal transfer printing work?

Thermal transfer printing involves using heat to transfer ink from a ribbon to the desired cable marker. The ribbon is placed between the marker and print head, acting as a pigment to mark the label material. The thermal print head contains hundreds of tiny discs that can be heated instantaneously. These discs selectively melt and delaminate the ink on the ribbon and transfer it to the cable marker. In comparison to direct thermal printing, thermal transfer printing provides a more durable and long-lasting result. We have shared a diagram below to help you understand the process of thermal transfer printing;

Why do only some cable markers work with the ribbons and not others?

All cable markers are made from different materials, such as polyolefin, polyester, and polyurethane. To understand how these markers perform in different environmental conditions, they are tested to mark permanence standards. This involves rub and solvent tests to see if the print on the cable marker can remain eligible in specific conditions.

In order to meet these standards, the cable marker is tested with different ink formulations to maximize mark permanence and performance. Different ink formulations represent the different types of thermal transfer printer ribbons. Only certain ink formulations will work with certain cable markers, meaning only certain types of printer ribbon will be compatible with cable markers.

However, it is important to note that other factors such as printer type, print speed and temperature will also come into consideration when choosing a compatible cable marker and ribbon.
