What products do I need to secure wires?

Securing cables is an essential requirement within any electrical installation. Government standards, such as the UK’s BS 7671, state the importance of securing cables and wires , making it necessary within any electrical project. There are various products available to secure cables effectively and precisely. To help you understand what you need, we have listed some of the most important products below;

  • Cable Clips, also known as cable mounting clips, are a core component for cable management. They help organise routed wiring by attaching cables to walls and ceilings. These are many different types of cable clips, such as P-clips, J-clips and self-adhesive clips, which uses various materials like nylon, stainless steel and PVC.

  • Cable Ties, (also known as a hose tie, zip tie or tie wrap) are a type of fastener that helps secure items together to provide organisation and prevent damage. They have many functional applications, and it is one of the most effective ways to manage your cables and wires. At Express Electrical, we offer many different types of cable ties which come in a variety of sizes and colours as well as speciality designs for screw mounting. Some of our most popular products are Stainless Steel Cable Ties, Releasable Cable Ties, and In-line Cable Ties.

  • Cable Clamps, (also known as cable cleats) are essential components of and electrical installation. They are designed to help restrict cable movement, provide resistance to any forces and assist with the support and retention of cables. They come in a variety of different materials, such as stainless steel, nylon and aluminium. Suitable for many different types of commercial and domestic work, cable clamps are a cost-effective solution within cable management. Cable cleats are essential for short-circuit protection. The forces exerted on cables in a short circuit situation are extreme and the fixing solution needs to be carefully designed and calculated with this in mind. We can assist with this specification work.

  • Cable Tie Tensioning Tools are more commonly known as cable tie guns. They help with the installation of cable ties by reducing operator fatigue, ensuring a consistent tension and removing any sharp ends. They are the ideal solution to speed up the cable management installation and enhance the reliability and long-term performance of your cable ties. We offer a wide range of cable tie tensioning tool products and accessories, including both manual and automatic guns that can work with both nylon and stainless-steel ties.

What type of cable tie do I need?

There are a vast variety of cable ties available in the market and it can become difficult to decide what one to use. To help you understand what zip tie is best for your needs, we have summarised the unique features and usage of our most popular cable ties;

  • Nylon Cable Ties - They offer flexibility, high tensile strength and resistance. They have weather and UV resistance properties which makes it ideal to use in a wide variety of applications, including general work and cable management. Although it is a very versatile material, standard nylon cable ties can have a reduction in physical properties when exposed to temperatures above 85 degrees. That’s why we stock a wide range of Weather Resistant and Heat Stabilised nylon cable ties that can withstand heat up to 120 degrees.

  • Stainless Steel Cable Ties - These cable ties are made to withstand harsh environments due to the high resistance properties and strength of the material. This includes high temperatures, UV weathering, chemical attacks and physical damage. Due to its high durability, it is primarily used for applications in hostile environments, such as mining, oil, chemical and automotive projects. As stainless ties are exceptionally strong, you will want to use a Cable Tie Tensioning Tool to ensure you get the correct and consistent tension and a neat and safe tail removal.

  • In-line Cable Ties - Also known as low-profile cable ties, in-line cable ties design offers an in-line locking system to leave the excess of the cable tie parallel. Made with Nylon 6.6, these are perfect for any application that requires a flat entry of cable ties, such as children safe construction projects like playgrounds. The low-profile design reduces any sharp edges and makes the process of bundling quick and effective.

  • Releasable Cable Ties - One main constraint with single-used cable ties is that they cannot be reused. This can be particularly difficult when projects require any kind of modification. In contrast, releasable cable ties (also known as reusable cable ties), use a trigger or pawl release mechanism to allow multiple usage of the product. This makes it more sustainable, environmentally friendly and versatile than a standard cable tie and therefore becomes the ideal product for any project that requires temporary fixings or compliance with environmental standards.

  • Specialised Cable Ties - At Express Electrical, we stock a variety of specialised cable ties that are designed to comply with specific industry standards. This includes zip ties made from high performance materials, such as PEEK, TEFZEL and HALAR which comply with standards required in specific industries such as the nuclear and space industries.
